Petrol pump strike ;  Around 2,000 petrol pumps, mostly in western and northern India, have run out of fuel, as a strike by several truckers' associations entered a second day on Tuesday amid discontent over the new hit-and-run law.

Industry officials said most petrol pumps have 2-3 days of stock and there should not be any problem if the strike lasts for three days. However, there will be trouble if the strike is extended or there are protests across India, they added.

There are about 1 lakh trucks that carry petrol and diesel as well as LPG from oil company depots to petrol pumps and gas distribution agencies.

The strike has affected the movement of trucks in some western and northern states, they said, adding that some LPG trucks have also been affected.

A transporters body on Tuesday claimed that the movement of around five lakh vehicles in Madhya Pradesh has been affected due to a strike by truck drivers against a provision in the new penal law for cases of hit-and-run accidents involving motorists. Many passengers were found stranded at the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in the state capital Bhopal as drivers did not ply inter-city buses on Tuesday morning. Some passengers complained of facing difficulties in traveling from Bhopal to Indore. A huge crowd was also seen at the petrol pumps in Bhopal.

The truckers are protesting against the new Indian Judicial Code, which was enacted to replace the Indian Penal Code, under which under the new law, a driver can be jailed for up to 10 years in a hit-and-run case. “Drivers find the law one-sided and harsh. In case of an accident, if we stay, an angry mob may cause damage to life and property. And, if we run, we will be punished severely," said an oil tanker driver, requesting anonymity.
